Goodbye everybody, thank you very much!

Wow Reception - you did it! Congratulations on a brilliant year, we hope you have enjoyed your first year at Luckwell as much as we have! We ended the year with another busy week. We said a fond farewell to our much loved Mrs Williamson with a special picnic lunch this week. We sang her the butterfly song as we gave her a solar powered butterfly for her garden! We also had 2 visitors; Mme Seve from our twin city of Bordeaux who enjoyed spending time with us and Hannah, a story illustrator, who did some drawings and shared her books with us.
Finally, not only would we like to say a massive thank you to all of you - children, parents, friends and family who have supported and helped us through the year, but all the Reception staff would also like to thank you all for your extremely generous gifts. Have a fantastic holiday, see you in September.

Fly away butterflies!

We said goodbye to our butterflies this week. They had all hatched out of their cocoons and were ready to be set free. We took them outside in their net and sat quietly round as Ms Redpath opened it up. They took off gradually, one by one and flew off to the trees and bushes in our garden. What an interesting experience it was to watch them grow from tiny caterpillars. Our week ended with a lovely Profile evening when we brought in our mums, dads, brothers and sisters to share our fabulous Learning Diaries and to find out all the things we have done during our year in Reception. Next week we will spend some more time in our new class and then it will be a big 'tidying up' time as we get ready for our long summer holiday.

Watching the butterflies

This week Reception have been thrilled to come each day and see what's been happening to the caterpillars. They have now nearly all emerged as beautiful butterflies ready to be set free, once the weather is kind enough! Some children spotted how the patterns on their wings are 'symmetrical'. The other very exciting thing that has happened was a quick visit on Friday to their Year 1 class. The children came back full of the exciting topics they will be studying, including a hint that they will be turning the school into a cinema and that they will be finding out what like was like "even before our mums and dads were born"! They will be spending another day in Year 1 during the last week of term.

Story telling, Healthy Lifestyles

Even as we went to press last Friday, a wonderful storyteller arrived in Reception's classroom and delighted the class with stories and actions about the (in)famous spiderman Ananse and his friends. The children were captivated, joining in with enthusiasm. Many thanks to Ollie's mum who organised this event. This week we continued our 'Healthy Lifestyles' by sorting foods into Healthy/unhealthy and making lists of healthy food and things that are OK for a treat. On Friday some of us made surveys to find out which fruit is the most popular in Reception. Wednesday afternoon was our first Sports Day and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Reception behaved so well and took part so brilliantly that they were ALL awarded 'Star of the Week' this week. Well done to everyone! We were sad to say goodbye to Ms Whitehead who's been our teacher for the past 10 weeks and wish her success in her new post next year.
