Fun at the zoo!

Reception class have had a very busy week this week! On Monday, they performed two dances in the schools ‘May Day’ celebration and Mrs Roberts was very impressed with their fantastic routines. Some children also taught their parents how to do the dance, and lots of parents joined in with the final dance.

On Tuesday , the class enjoyed a trip to the zoo and were able to see some of their favourite animals. The lions and monkeys were very popular and the children were all happy that they got to see the baby seals. In the education centre, the children looked at lots of mini-beasts, including a tarantula, and a lot of children were brave enough to hold cockroaches and stroke big stick insects! Luckily, it did not rain, so the class enjoyed eating their packed lunches together on the grass. Back in school, the children have written sentences about their favourite part of the zoo trip, and have stuck photographs onto their work.

On Thursday, the children took part in a healthy living workshop with an ‘A-life’ visitor, Mr Adams. They looked at healthy foods and foods that are eaten as treats, and learnt how to brush their teeth properly. In the afternoon, the class also took part in some fun exercise. Next week the class will be looking closely at healthy eating and healthy living as part of ‘healthy schools week’.

The very hungry caterpillars

This week, as part of their 'animals' topic, the class have been treating their animals and teddies in the vets role play area. They have also used the pet shop role play area in the classroom to buy and sell their animals.

The children also enjoyed using the outdoor garden area on sunny days this week to draw pictures and write about their pets.

Today, the children put baby caterpillars into small jars. They are looking forward to watching the caterpillars grow and eventually turn into butterflies. Once the butterflies have grown in the butterfly net, they will be released into the reception class garden area.

Reception class blog

Last week, Reception class read the story ‘The Enormous Watermelon’ and acted it out to one another. They also used story sacks and puppets to perform their favourite stories, including ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.

Reception class were also learning about height last week and had lots of fun measuring different things. The children compared objects to see which were taller and which were shorter, and also recorded and compared their own heights using chalk on the wall in the playground.

During a music lesson, Reception class used different instruments to help them perform the story ‘Jessie’s Flower’. The class worked well together and made some nice sounds. They also looked at changing sounds by making them faster, slower, louder and quieter.
